White on White - and cleaning SNC mats.....

One thing I don't like about the Scan N Cut is the quality of the mats, they seem quite flimsy and thin - and because the machine is capable of cutting chipboard or leather, you have to be really careful with your blade depth or it can slice straight through - which I have done in one spot on this mat, but I just put a piece of duct tape on the back. The stickiness is not very long lasting, but after years of using the Cricut and Silhouette, this isn't a problem. I'll show you tomorrow how I re-sticky them, but try this first - you really do need a good adhesion in these machines, or the paper/cardstock will move around and your cut will be ruined - so fill your sink with HOT soapy water, get out your dish scrubbing brush and start scrubbing. You can really put some elbow grease into it, and you'll be surprised at the muck that comes off. Rinse well and leave to dry. Hey presto, it dries nice and sticky again.

My card today is made totally with cuts from the machine - they don't have a very inspiring built in library, but I have spotted a lot that I really like, and am going to make a few cards using the built in shapes. This one is pretty generic really, so you could make something similar using your Cricut or Silhouette. I cut two frames, one slightly smaller and ran them through the big shot - my mantra for white on white cards (which you know I love) is always dimension and texture. Raise up all your layers, add texture, otherwise it looks like a flat mess of white card......

the flower, banner and scroll were all from the shapes.....

So the sun is shining, spring is in the air, but it's still a bit on the cool side. But some intrepid Brits look out of the window, see the sun shining, and dig out the tee shirts, shorts and flip flops. Not a good look with goosebumps! It needs to be at least 10 degrees warmer before I take off my thermals....

See you tomorrow x

  1. So pretty and I love the white. Still in the box and I am looking over that way and saying I need to get this out. Mom is not doing well and I have been with her most of the day and then cooking. She is not eating well and I fixed her something and she ate it. You are doing so good with the Scan and Cut....

  2. A lovely card Enfys. Thanks for sharing about cleaning the mats, I agree that the mats are rather flimsy and do get dirty easily. Mine too has duct tape on the back of one of them lol.

  3. LOVE what you are doing with the SnC so far. White on white cards have always been my favorite, and this one is stunning. You do an excellent job of adding textures, layers, and dimension ... these are the kind of cards I want to reach through my computer screen an touch!

I think you already know how interested I am in the SnC. There are just so many great features it offers that I love. So I am most anxious to see how your experience goes and how well you like the SnC. You've mentioned the poor adhesive on the mats, and how to clean and help restore them. I'm just curious, do other mats fit with this machine? I believe that the mats on some machines (brands) are interchangable. Or does this machine have some type of electronic eye, for scanning purposes, that requires the use of their mats only? Also, do you happen to know if the mats are easily attainable, or are they only available through online ordering? In other words, if/when I do get the SnC, would I be wise to order multiples of mats too?

  4. Love a wow card and agree re texture and dimension. Quite agree re the weather, I think they look stupid in shorts and flip flops when most people are still pretty wrapped up warm.

  6. Love the white on white. Just beautiful.
My one complaint about the Silhouette is how thin the mats are. I cut right through mine the other day, not once but twice! Now I have to be very careful where I cut. And to make things even more annoying, Michael's won't use a coupon on the mats.

  7. Pretty white on white card. This machine seems to be a perfect tool for card makers/scrapbookers. I wonder if C&C will have exclusivity permanently or whether other retail outlets will be able to sell it in due course. Perhaps the price will come down a bit if that's the case. Pat x

  8. Good Morning Enfys! I always enjoy the white on white look you create! You never disappoint me ... thank you!

Thanks for sharing the information about cleaning the mats. I had read that somewhere and have also done this, wasn't sure if there was a better way to do this.

  11. Ha, same here on Crete, except here it's the early tourists, including the Brits, who put on their summer cloths, while the locals and ex-pats are still dressed fairly warmly. I have to admit, though, that the outside temperature out in the sun is usually better than the temperature inside our house, with no insulation and single stone walls... On a more positive note, the house heats up slowly in summer...
I love seeing WOW cards and I admire people who can pull them off! Maybe it's time to give it another go myself.

  12. Me too, It was up in the 80's yesterday, but today it's raining and the temp is going down again! YUK! Love the card. I think all your cards are fabulous. Whether they were made in one of your machines, or just cut out by your own little hands. Big hugs, Jess

  13. Oh Enfys, I doubt if I'll ever own one of those machines. BUT, I do think about your opinion (which I so share) when am doing the supermarket run here in the UK when the sun shines. Shorts, wibble wobbles of fat, strappy tops, flip flops ... and that's just the menfolk!! Shudder :(
